    Ring and number say different things. A ring marks one of the three best sites of its slice on terrain, access and duration — fixed, and the same ranking used everywhere else on this site. A letter marks one of the three clearest sites of that slice at the moment on the slider, and moves as you drag it. Letters on the map, numbers in the tables — they are different rankings, so they do not share a scale. A ringed site showing A is where you want to be; a ringed site with no letter is a good site that happens to be under cloud.

    Two sampling modes. Sight line: 48 sites (best 6 per slice, all scoring 85+), 4 points each along the ray, worst value. Overhead only: the other 93, 1 point at the site, broken outline. Overhead differs from sight line by >25 points in ~8 % of hours — treat it as a hint. Every site page uses sight line regardless.

    What the colours mean. Low and mid cloud decide whether you see a 5–10° sun; high cirrus dims the corona but does not hide it, so the colour uses the worse of the low and mid layers.

    Why not overhead. Sun ~8° at totality, so the ray is inside low cloud out to ~14 km west and mid cloud to ~50 km. Server copy samples overhead; the bar says which is loaded.
